Between 1974-1989, East Germany made Olympic athletes use oral turinabol, a steroid that could not be detected at that time, and achieved success.

They also used epitestosterone during this period to skew testosterone readings in the State Plan Research Theme drug test, as it is officially known.

Jenapharm stopped producing the product in 1994 when it was discovered that Oral Turinabol was part of the East German scandal.

Two years later, Germany Schering's pharmaceutical company, manufacturers of steroids such as Primobolan 9, Testoviron 5 and Proviron, bought Jenapharm, but did not re-launch Oral Turinabol.

Since then this anabolic steroid has not been produced by a real pharmaceutical company and has become a black market underground anabolic steroid.

Oral Turinabol, formally known as 4-chlorodehydromethyltestosterone, is basically a structurally modified form of Dianabol (Methandrostenolone) that is a derivative of testosterone. Oral Turinabol is a testosterone hormone with an additional double bond at carbons 1 and 2, which shifts the anabolic to androgenic ratio in favor of anabolic.

It also carries an added Chloro group at carbon 4, which prevents the hormone from aromatizing and further reduces its androgenic nature. The final change is an additional methyl group at carbon position 17 that protects the hormone through oral administration. This last change officially classifies Oral Turinabol as a C17-alpha alkylated (C17-aa) anabolic androgenic steroid.

Functionally, the characteristics of Oral Turinabol are very simple. Like most anabolic steroids, it has a positive effect on protein synthesis and nitrogen retention, as well as increasing red blood cell count. All of these traits are important as they enhance the anabolic nature of the individual. Protein synthesis, nitrogen retention, and the production of red blood cells are notable and highly beneficial properties.

It also has lower androgenic properties as the steroid does not aromatize. This is very important for preserving existing muscles.

The mild nature of Oral Turinabol makes it very attractive, but its key feature is its ability to significantly reduce Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG).

Although it does not carry this ability as strongly as some steroids, it has a significant effect. This reduction in SHBG provides more active and free testosterone. Basically, the individual can benefit more from other steroids used without the need to increase the dose simply because of the synergy created by Turinabol. Because of all these properties of Oral Turinabol, it is more suitable for muscle building and lean, clean muscle mass rather than for bulking purposes.
